DRILL:
Teaching with Half Court Drives
It is getting close to the “stretch run” and as coaches we continually look for ways to teach our teams the concepts, skills, and details that will make our selected offenses and defenses grow and get better. We are always trying to help our teams “connect the dots” and make it easier to understand. We also want quick reviews during the season that are “to the point” and don’t require a lot of energy and time.
HALF COURT DRIVES are just the ticket for the Run and Jump Press! They are simple to run and will teach all the “game elements” that you need.
ORGANIZATION– Start with two teams (10 players) assembled at half court in no specific order. Coach has the ball and tosses in either direction calling out the color of that team or a specific person you want to lay it in. Then that team will get into the specific Run and Jump Press formation that you have called. The layup is free with NO defensive interference. We press one trip with corrections and ideas that may occur. If we steal, we ATTACK!! PLEASE DO NOT stop your team to talk! When the possession is complete, both teams are back to half court and here we go again.
We also want to work off MISSES, so we will shoot a jump shot instead of a layup. Once the FREE shot is released, WE ARE LIVE! Boxouts, rebounds, ball pressure, are all in play. If the shot is MADE, the ball is taken out. If MISSED, immediate pressure on the ball and we are in our 1-2-2 initial formation. Once again, if we steal, we ATTACK!! If we SCORE, we are back into the press. If we MISS,we are back into the press. Ball goes OB, we go back to half court and start again.
-GREAT WAY TO REHEARSE THE RUN & JUMP PRESS–
