Arms UP Technique and Fundamental

As I have said often, there are three major focus points of the Run & Jump Press that always needs your attention. LIMIT the FOULS – LIMIT the LAYUPS – LIMIT the OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS! One of your Team Game Goals should be to have LESS FOULS than your opponent. My most recent high school team that I assisted, played (24) games, pressed the entire game, and had LESS fouls in (20) of those contests!

If you are to FOUL LESS, you must teach your players how to NOT FOUL when they are pressing. Above you will see a picture of a team that brought me in for a Run & Jump Press Clinic this fall. We run a simple drill called ARMS UP! The game photo demonstrates the perfect position and body control that will keep the official from calling the foul. Showing your arms and hands when contact is made is extremely important!!

ARMS UP DRILL- Partner up with a ball. Line the team up on the baseline with the first set of partners in front of the basket. Defender shades the ball towards the right sideline and runs with the ball handler. When contact is made the arms MUST come up. If space is created the arms can come back down. RUN with the ball handler. DON’T SHUFFLE! When you reach the other end, switch positions, and bring it back up the opposite right side again. The group is in continuous flow up the right to up the right coming back. When you are ready, turn the line around and go up the left. REMEMBER! RUN WITH THE BALL and start with space between the ball handler and the defense. DO NOT LAY ON THE BALL HANDLER! Any Questions- I AM AT YOUR SERVICE!
