Psychology of the Run & Jump Press

As coaches, we wear so many hats. To get the most out of our athletes we are expected to be, sports physiologists, neuroscientists, and sports psychologists. In tight games your players are privately tormented by thoughts, beset by doubts and there is a disaster just waiting to happen. Why is that?

Players get anxious about performing. They begin scrutinizing actions that are best performed automatically. Their heightened self-consciousness under pressure can contribute to a domino-like chain of psychological and physiological reactions that might cause them to underperform, even when their talent or finely honed skills suggest the outcome should be otherwise. The pressure is mental, emotional, and physical. This is where the Run and Jump Press comes in!

Self-focus theories hold that when pressure causes individuals to focus too keenly on execution, it can sabotage their ability to perform even routine tasks. All athletes change under pressure. Physically, the brain releases cortisol or adrenaline under pressure, two things that can contribute to athletes losing fine motor skills, coordination and even the ability to think clearly. Their feel, touch, rhythm, and accuracy commonly desert them. As coaches we sometimes use the old sports standby: “Don’t think.” However, misdirected thinking can be as bad for an athlete as overthinking. This is where the Run and Jump Press comes in!

How many of your games have you witnessed a train wreck – watching your team bleed and feeling utter helplessness. Your program can have a ‘fixed mindset,’ or a ‘growth mindset.’ A fixed mindset team believes, -we are either good enough or we are not. The trouble is, having that fixed attitude limits their ability to grow and cope with the things that are happening. This is where the Run and Jump Press comes in!

Great coaches win the close games, more often than not. It is not always about making the right call at the right time. It is also about how you train your team and what systems you employ. This is where the Run and Jump Press comes in!

The Run and Jump Press is specifically designed for less thinking. YES – there is a method to the madness, however it puts your players in a position to think less and play more. It allows them to Run and Rotate and Rebound. There is absolutely NO reason to get anxious. The Run and Jump Press is absolutely a growth mindset and will automatically build your program.
