The more I teach the R&J Press, the more I realize our TOP emphasis is to get the players to THINK LESS and GO MORE! Players start out very TENTATIVE and CONSERVATIVE, which is a natural tendency. They are concerned about “getting beat.” We must work to ELIMINATE that tendency!
The R&J Press operates in the UGLY business. Make the offense UGLY and put them into survival mode. The R&J Press theme could be- UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL!
As we know and understand, often it is HOW YOU TEACH that is MORE IMPORTANT than WHAT YOU TEACH!
THE TEACHING PROCESS
- NEVER say NEVER to the players!
- NEVER say DON’T do this or DON’T do that!
- Teach to ATTACK first and then you can SORT it out!
- PRESSURE and JUMP and TRAP and ROTATE!
- DO NOT get bogged down with the details.
METHOD TO THE MADNESS
- Jump the Middle Drives
- Trap the Sideline and Corners
- Rim Line is important- full and half court.
- Shade OB to Short Corner
- POSITION – POSITION – POSITION -Emphasis
- Try not to chase guards on Inbounds
- Try not to JUMP UP the sideline
- On Trap Rotation- TRAPPER STAYS
TEACH AND DEVELOP A PRESSING MINDSET– RELENTLESS– When we a STEAL- WE SCORE and press IMMEDIATELY! Don’t blow the whistle and stop them.
R&J is a PPRR System
- PRESSURE
- POSITION
- ROTATE
- REBOUND
You want the Offense in SURVIVAL MODE – NOT Execution Mode.
TEACHING PRESS AFTER MISSES
- 5-5 CIRCLE
- 1-2-2 Formation
- Immediate Ball Pressure
- Locate your Player in relation to the ball
- THIS IS NOT A ZONE!
TEACHING R&J HALF COURT
- 5 on 4 Rotations
- 5 on 5 Trap Corners
- 5 on 5 Jump the Dribbler
- 1-2-2 Formation – HC
- 5 on 5 LIVE- One Guard Front
- 5 on 5 LIVE- Two Guard Front
- THIS IS NOT A ZONE!
The new 3/4 court 3×3 “Set the Front” Drill looks good. Great way to teach and rehearse different options/colors/combinations/rotations which also gives your opponent a different look and push.
Continue to stress to coaches on “letting the players go” during the process. DO NOT OVERTEACH!
- If they think and think and think, they will slow down, not rotate well, and can struggle with pressure.
- Stick to few rules while you PRESSURE and RUN and
- This becomes the ultimate fun for you and stress for the opponent.
- Once the players start to flow better and understand, then you can tweak the rotations and not expose the basket as much.
Let the players be part of the SOLVING PROCESS! Ask them “what they think.” Give them more IDEAS- NOT MORE RULES! Let them FIGURE IT OUT!
We are working more on PRESS AFTER MISSES! Why let you opponent walk it up and rest.
We are stressing more on getting the players that rotate back into the Front Court to stay higher and STAY ENGAGED and not just sit down by the basket.
The new full court 3×3 “Pass and Cut Through” Drill looks good. Teaches longer Jumps and Runs and Denying the Cut Through Players.
