Here are some added notes for this summer R&J Camps- If you are having ANY CONCERNS with any movements in the Run and Jump- PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE to contact me. I am here for you.
ADJUSTMENT. A team is getting downhill on you or spacing you out- Take the player off the ball and jump into the 21 look. That will slow them down and make them hesitate.
On the R&J DVD #1 you will notice that I teach the Sideline Trap (BLUE) with the defender on the ball cutting the ball off. I ACTUALLY do teach it both ways but PREFER the defender trapping from the middle with the on the ball defender FUNNELING the ball down the sideline. HOWEVER, once again, you don’t want to become predictable and we continue teaching the players to play the ball. We DO NOT want to restrict the players.
As the camps have unfolded, I have kept a running observation of teaching points on the Run and Jump. These are some things I have seen and continually emphasis over the summer.
- Teach OVER AGGRESSIVE (without fouling). You can always back off.
- Take Your Team out of COMFORT ZONE. Get them OUTSIDE the box.
- The R&J needs to be UNPREDICTABLE which means you DON’T always have to Trap or Jump or Red.
- NEVER lose sight of what you are trying to create for your opponent.
- Fatigue /
- Frustration /
- Chaos /
- Stress /
- Turnovers /
- Quick-Poor Shots /
Ultimate Commitment is so very important when teaching and running the Run and Jump. You CAN’T
- Just Kind of Jump
- Just Kind of Trap
- Just Kind of Press
- Just Kind of Run
Everyone MUST buy in and GET AFTER IT! Create Energy and EXCITEMENT in your practice and in your program!
A great press PHRASE and EXPECTATION- “Play the Ball- DO NOT let the Ball Play You!”
(3) Musts to Make Press Work
- Limited Fouls
- Limited Easy Baskets
- Limited Offensive Rebounds
When in Doubt- GO..GO..GO
Once the Run and Jumps is put into practice, it will NATURALLY just keep getting better. The press will actually FEED ITSELF. There will start to be-
- Quicker Rotations
- Better Angles of Attack
- Greater Anticipation
- Smarter Decisions
- More Efficient Traps
- Quicker Jumps
- More Turnovers
- More Tips From Behind
Once the players recognize the FUN and the SUCCESS of the Run and Jump, there will be no stopping what your team can create and how efficient your press can become. In this summer’s camps and clinics we forced a ton of turnovers and probably only operated the press at 10%-15%.
ADJUSTMENTS
Coaches are calling to discuss an issue or two that they are seeing their opponent use against them. An example of this would be a team placing a player in the middle of the court. As your rim line defender rotates to trap sideline, the middle player gets open with the pass going there. NO PROBLEM- The tip from behind is in play OR you might keep your rim line defender in the middle and trap with the OB cover defender. You are going to see all kind of attempts to soften the Run and Jump Press. What makes this press so special is your ability to adjust on the fly and your players can handle it because you are constantly working with them on rotation and pressure and attack. You are NOT teaching them A to B to C to D. You continually work on press break SITUATIONS and discuss/suggest how you might cover them.
QUESTIONS LIKE THIS ARE AWESOME SO CALL OR EMAIL AND WE CAN DISCUSS.
Working on the Run and Jump press means we continue to break down-
- Closeouts
- Floor Position for Gaps and Rim Line
- Jump Middle / Trap Sideline
- Getting In Press Formation Quickly (1-2-2/2-1-2)
- Tipping the Dribbler
- Controlling the Middle
- Situation Adjustments
REMEMBER- we don’t have DIFFERENT RULES for DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. We continue to teach the same methods no matter what.
WHAT I HAVE SEEN
Installing the Run and Jump Press has been fun – Some things that I have seen that will correct itself in time
- Players are TOO conservative – They are afraid of getting beat
- REMEMBER – NO RISK at 80/70/60 feet- FORCE the ACTION
- SLOW Rotations- GO GO GO- RUN RUN RUN
- NO PRESSURE On the Ball- Once again- FEAR of Getting Beat
- Jump/Trap UP the Sideline- Not a GOOD IDEA
- Too MUCH thinking- JUST GO and Sort It Out
- TRAP FOULING- Trapping does NOT mean reaching
REMEMBER- There is a METHOD to the MADNESS- We have simple rules that we adhere to.
