PERSPECTIVE and PERCEPTION

I was recently talking to some college basketball coaches on the Run and Jump Press and they told me that they didn’t think their team were “instinctive” enough or “athletic” enough to use it.  That got me thinking about coaches “perspective” and “perception” on installing, teaching, and using the Run and Jump.  It made me realize, that I needed to do a better job of helping coaches “understand” this press.  In other words, I needed to focus more on the WHY and not just the HOW.

The Run and Jump Press is most definitely an “outside the box” system.  It is most assuredly a COMMITMENT defense.  In other words, you don’t just “kind of” Run and Jump.  Both coach and team need to jump (pardon the pun) in with both feet.  While teams that are “instinctive” and “athletic” can be better prepared no matter what they run, having that as a prerequisite is simply not true.  With that said, allow me to explain WHAT we are doing with the Run and Jump.

Run and Jump Press Constantly Develops a-

  • CULTURE
  • TOUGHNESS
  • MINDSET

You will be building a program for the long haul that allows you to play more athletes and thus will internally FEED itself.   The players and coaches will develop a passion for the consistent and constant pressure that wears opponents down.

The Run and Jump is NOT an A to B to C defense but does have the building blocks and certainly has a “method to its madness.”

Run and Jump Important Teaching Blocks-

  • JUMPING THE BALL
  • POSITION ON THE FLOOR
  • ROTATION AND ANGLES
  • TRAPPING THE BALL
  • PRESSURING THE BALL
  • TIPPING FROM BEHIND
  • RUNNING THE FLOOR

In order to teach and learn the building blocks listed above, you neither need to be instinctive or athletic.  You simply go over the blocks, repeat the drills, and open up your mind.  You are constantly engaging your team to play full court basketball and NOT TO

  • FOUL
  • ALLOW LAY UPS
  • GIVE UP OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS
