Defending the Clear Out

In the Run and Jump Press, let us MAKE SURE that we 100% understand this. Repeat after me………  (Say it three times coaches😊)

WE WILL NOT ALLOW OUR OPPONENT TO CLEAR US OUT!

Yes, you heard me!  The Number 1 press breaker versus the Run and Jump Press is the CLEAR OUT!  So, let’s get to work at defending it.   First and foremost, it is important that we have different attacks to the Clear Out.  As you already know, this continues to make us UNPREDICTABLE!

HERE ARE SOME CLEAR OUT ATTACKS –

  • RED TRAP IMMEDIATELY- This leaves the opposite elbow defender to cover the slash cut which means they can also cover the loop cut-  This leaves the back two defenders to cover three players.
  • SOFT OR DELAYED RED –  On the Ball Defender starts to clear out with the middle player and comes back to jump the ball handler.  Opposite elbow defender once again covers the middle.
  • BLACK OFF THE KEY GUARD–  Make it extremely difficult for the main ball handling guard to get the ball by denying them in the first place.  Make the other guard handle the ball.
  • THE 21 LOOK-   Take the on ball defender off the ball and place them in the middle to give the R&J a more ZONE look even though this is still man to man.  Have the middle man stay home to jump middle or trap sideline.
  • STRAIGHT UP DEFEND–  Have the clear out defender simply work the ball handler, making the ball handler turn and run and turn and work, looking for the opportunity to trap or jump which might occur over the half court line. PRESSURE THE BALL!

REMEMBER – we are in the CHAOS and FATIGUE business and the CLEAR OUT is designed to take that away.  Having a multiple attack of the CLEAR OUT is essential in not allowing this.  Take a look at the CLEAR OUT in practice and work through ideas with your team so they do not become frustrated.  Patience is an important part of dealing with the CLEAR OUT, and we do not want our players to overthink this.   Steering the ball handler with pressure will get them going as we want them to dribble.

Never forget what I told you in camp over and over.  You want to be

THE TEAM THAT NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY!

The Run and Jump Press gives you that ability and that opportunity.

GOOD LUCK THIS SEASON!
